TSO will be upgrading the code on the Cisco Catalyst 4506E switches located in the Technology Square Research Building (TSRB).

Monday, August 10th, from 3-4pm.

WHY IS IT HAPPENING?

The Cisco Catalyst switches located in TSRB are running older software that is unable to handle the newer protocol that OIT is using throughout campus. You can read more about the campus protocol change below -

OIT Network Services migrated the backend protocol that powers DVLAN from VQP to RADIUS. The old protocol used for VLAN assignment on DVLAN-enabled switches, VQP, is an old, Cisco-proprietary protocol that is no longer supported on newer Cisco applications and switches. Therefore, Network Services migrated to use MAC Authentication over RADIUS since RADIUS is a well-supported industry standard protocol (RFC2865). Any host connected to a DVLAN-enabled port may have experienced a brief interruption in connectivity as VLAN assignment policy gets changed from a VQP/VMPS one to a RADIUS MAC Auth one. 

WHO IS AFFECTED?

College of Computing users in TSRB located on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor will experience a brief network interruption as the switches for each floor are rebooted. The reboot should take about 5 minutes for each switch.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

No user action is required. If networking doesn't recover after the maintenance window, please contact the HelpDesk.
